Johnny Green
Johnny Green is a mid-career artist working predominantly in photography, with an expanding practice that also incorporates sound and film. He divides his time between Leicester and London, and from 2018 to 2023 held a studio space at Two Queens, where he remains a member and shareholder.
Green’s photographic work is grounded in a sensitivity to documentary and street photography, often brushing up against abstraction and conceptual exploration. Alongside his artistic practice, he works commercially—drawing on a broad skill set that includes portraiture and photojournalism. This dual focus stems from over a decade spent in journalism (2000–2012), followed by a freelance career with a diverse and international client base.
He has exhibited his personal and project-based work since 1998, with shows across the UK as well as in Colombia and Taiwan. His photographs are held in private collections around the world. Green’s first photobook, Transience, was published in 2017. A second, The Black Swan, is due for release in spring 2024, with a third title expected next year.

During his residency at CMR, Johnny Green plans to produce a fast-paced, responsive body of work, culminating in a public evening event that brings together photography, film, and sound. These will be presented as three distinct but interrelated pieces, each around 5–10 minutes in length, followed by a talk reflecting on the work and process.
Green envisions spending the first seven to ten days of the residency immersed in Redruth and the surrounding landscape—creating content, meeting people, and absorbing the atmosphere of the area. The final days will focus on editing and refining the material into standalone works for the event.
A long-time field recordist and DJ, Green has been collecting soundscapes since 2010, often alongside photography during long walks. His deep connection to both sound and image means these mediums frequently overlap in his projects. For the concluding event at CMR, he plans to include a curated setlist of music that reflects his experience of the residency—tracks he listened to while working, or those that seem to resonate with the landscape, people, and shared moments. The evening will act as a celebration of time, place, and process, presented in a spirit of openness and creative exchange.
